7/23/98: Slept in a bit, then took a 2:00PM bus tour of the city. In four hours, we made a very long and complex series of stops, which appropriately reflected the very long and complex history of this ancient and new country. The tour included the Historical Museum, the Hanging Gardens, the Discovery of India Center and the Taraporewala Aquarium. Three spots of special note included Mani Bhavan, or “Jewel House,” a home used by Mahatma Ghandi as his headquarters in Bombay, and which is now a museum in his honor. Second, we stopped at the Haji Ali Dargah, the burial spot of a revered Muslim “saint,” which is on a small island 200 yards from the beach and only reachable during low tide. Third, we visited The Gateway of India, a spot related to British colonial history, which was built in 1911 to welcome and commemorate the visit of King George V.
