Just Like Back Home, Sort Of…

Posted on August 1, 2023

8/1/98: Out and about doing some curio shopping… Still seeing many unfamiliar things along with plenty that is familiar too… India is a country with 28 states and 8 territories, 22 different official languages, 14 different formal alphabets, over 2,000 distinct ethnic groups and, some would say, a multiplicity of countless religions in the polytheism of Hinduism, but also including Islam, Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism, Zoroastrianism, Judaism and Christianity… And there are men, women and children, business owners, taxi drivers, and printing press operators too, just like back home…

NOTE: The image above is part of the entrance to a Parsi Fire Temple in Mumbai. The Parsis are part of the Zoroastrian religion with origins in Persia, hence the very Persian symbol of the gryphon.

I worked as a printing press operator for a period after I graduated from college. One of the presses that I worked on was a “windmill” letter press much like the one I was delighted to find in a small print shop on a side street in Mumbai, shown in the photo.
After chatting for a while with the owner of the shop, he kindly gave me two pieces of lead type which I still have in my collection to this day.
