8/29/98: Travel day: I think I’m going to Kathmandu… Crossed the border in from Raxaul, India to Birgunj, Nepal… The poor old pony pulling the cart was such a frail beast that it couldn’t even manage a trot, so we were late and missed our bus to Kathmandu… Read LOTR aloud to each other during the four-hour wait for the next bus… Spectacular scenery as the bus climbed the hills into Kathmandu… Settled in to a nice but inexpensive backpacker’s hotel…
NOTE: The photo above shows a stupa (“heap”) in the Itum Bahal neighborhood of Kathmandu. Buddhists practice meditating while walking around these structures.
