Brightly Colored Everything

Posted on August 31, 2023

8/31/98: Touched base with Marcelle P. in Pokhara, and purchased tickets onward… I went off on my own to find a birthday present for Ruth… Was hoping to purchase a sapphire (her birth stone) for her, but even though prices here are far lower than in the US, it was still way out of our budget… Wandered the city a bit more, then went to bed in prep for tomorrow’s travel day… Experienced many more new sights and sounds, including Sadhus, open air markets, and brightly colored everything…

NOTE: The photo above shows some architectural details (along with a napping local) of the Jagannath Temple in Hanuman Dhoka Durbar Square, Kathmandu, Nepal.

Bright colors pervade Nepalese culture, from architecture to clothing. Here, a seller of sheer silk fabric displays his product in an open air market.
A Sadhu is a Hindu, Buddhist or Jain man who adopts ascetism, renouncing worldly possessions and taking vows of celibacy. Female ascetics, Sadhvi, are less common, but are also present.
