9/9/98: Final day in Nepal, out and about doing some souvenir shopping… I added to my musical instrument collection by purchasing a Nepalese Sarangi, a stringed instrument which is bowed like a violin… (Watch and listen to video embedded below…) The body, neck and head are all carved from a single piece of wood, and the resonator part of the body is covered with snake skin. Interestingly, the strings are not pressed against the neck to change the pitch, rather, the finger nails are used to touch the strings much like a “slide” guitar, so that the notes of a melody blend in glissando fashion…
