12/15/98: Ruth gave a lecture on epidemiology (infection control) at a nursing school today… What a challenge to communicate complex technical information through an interpreter… Later on, I rode around on the back of a motorcycle driven by David, who drove so recklessly I feared I would wind up in a bad accident… He was supposed to help as my interpreter, but spoke very little English. That made for comical interactions between me and the various people we went out to meet and photograph at various Indonesian churches and ministries… I suspect much was lost in translation of my arm waving, hand motions and over-dramatic facial expressions…
