1/21/99: We dropped dad off at his golf game, and then did some shopping for a tool for mounting slides in their frames. Managed to find one, but it’s pretty old and won’t be easy to work with. But at least we can get some of our slides mounted… Lunch at Cupie’s, an old drive-in type place in Kahului, then we picked up dad at the golf course and headed back upcountry to Kula… In Chicago we say “Let’s go up to the north side,” but on Maui, “upcountry” literally means you are travelling up the mountain…
NOTE: The photo above shows a horse on one of the upcountry ranches higher up the slopes of Haleakala from where Dad and Mom live in Kula. We did lots of driving around during our extended time on Maui at the end of our trip, and idyllic scenes like this were abundant.
