2/12/99: More slide work for me today. Ruth was over at Kathy’s baking Valentine’s cookies… We went to Pastor F’s house for dinner tonight. Lots of people for me to meet and everyone was interested in our big adventure, so we talked a lot…
2/12/24: *During our 1999 stay with Dad & Mom at the end of our round-the-world trip, we did not take many photos. So, I am posting photos and stories from some of our other trips to Maui over the years.
While there are no towns of any substantial size on the leeward side of Haleakala, there are some ranches, nature preserves, and small villages and homesteads dotted across this south-facing slope of the mountain, like the little outpost of Kaupo, which I mentioned yesterday. Where there are people, they will want and need to worship, and out on a spit of land poking out into the Pacific sits Huialoha Church, built in 1859. It is not a museum, but the meeting place of a Christian congregation. We visited during our 1995 trip, and were shown around by a church member. A beautiful and simple house of worship, inside and outside, in a serene place.
NOTE: The photo above, from our 2010 trip to Maui, shows Huialoha Church with its beautiful Pacific back drop, from the road above the church.
