2/13/99: I finished going through the slides and mounting some (at least for the time being), and pulled out some for a slide show over at Kathy and Todd’s house in a few days…
2/13/24: *During our 1999 stay with Dad & Mom at the end of our round-the-world trip, we did not take many photos. So, I am posting photos and stories from some of our other trips to Maui over the years.
Heading west from Hana and Kipahulu back toward the valley on the road that runs along the south-facing leeward side of Haleaka, the road does not stay down by the rocky shore line, but climbs gently upward. There is a ridge that runs down from the summit all the way to the Makena and Wailea resort area of “south Maui,” and as you approach that ridge you come to the ’Ulupalakua Ranch. Besides raising cattle on the slopes of the mountain, the Ranch also has a winery, which is typically reached by coming eastward from the valley. Between the Ranch and the ridge, you get a clear and beautiful view down the slope to La Perouse Bay, Makena, Wailea and Kihei as the shoreline runs northward.
NOTE: The photo above, from our 2010 trip to Maui, shows a view from the road just west of ’Ulupalakua Ranch all the way down to La Perouse Bay and black rocky terrain of the lava field that surrounds it.
