2/21/99: Today is dad’s 78th birthday. And he is still climbing and pruning trees as well as doing lots of other heavy yard work at church every Saturday. I hope I am still going that strong when We were invited to dinner at the home of Bob and Armida S, down in Kihei. It was nice to get better aquatinted with all of the people that Ruth grew up with.
2/21/24: *During our 1999 stay with Dad & Mom at the end of our round-the-world trip, we did not take many photos. So, I am posting photos and stories from some of our other trips to Maui over the years.
Many tourists don’t know Oluwalu on the island of Maui, even though they have “been there.” The road that connects Lahaina with the valley towns, upcountry and south Maui resorts passes through a small area with narrow road-side beaches and seemingly barren and dry slopes upward toward the West Maui Mountains. Though the beaches aren’t lavishly decorated and landscaped like the resort areas, they are worth stopping at. And for those who are up for a dry, desert-like hike, instead of the rain-forest hikes more typically associated with Hawai’i, you can find your way to a site with 200-year-old petroglyphs.
NOTE: The photo above, from our 1995 trip to Maui, shows me posing next the Pu’u Kilea petroglyphs in the Oluwalu area of Maui.
