2/23/99: Ruth and I baby-sat Micah this evening so Todd and Kathy could go on a date. Being new parents, they haven’t had much alone time lately. And of course, since we were surrounded by the subject, we had a long talk about having a family someday…
2/23/24: *During our 1999 stay with Dad & Mom at the end of our round-the-world trip, we did not take many photos. So, I am posting photos and stories from some of our other trips to Maui over the years.
The honu (sea turtles) seem to prefer the north shores of the island for laying their eggs. Ho’okipa is a public access area, but there is a section of beach that the honu migrate to during egg-laying season. It is easy enough to observe the honu when they are there, but if you do visit Ho’okipa, please respect the ropes that designate the areas that are off-limits to humans. This is not a spot where you should feel free to walk the beach near their nests, nor get in the water to snorkel and see the honu swimming. Respect the rules and keep them safe.
NOTE: The photo above, from our 2022 trip to Maui, shows honu crawling ashore to lay their eggs at Ho’okipa.
