7/31/98: An up-close view of the caste system, officially outlawed in 1950, but still practiced throughout India… Visited a house church in one of Mumbai’s vast slum neighborhoods… Rakesh also took us to his sister’s home on a trash heap land-fill, 3 rooms each with a separate family living in it… Yet they still welcomed us like family…
NOTE: While there are a number of vast slum neighborhoods with millions of people dwelling in squalid poverty, there are also min-slums throughout Mumbai, wherever a family can put up a tarp or surround themselves with any sort of urban detritus for walls.
