8/23/98: Arrived safely in Raxaul, India… Transport from the trainstation was riding in the back of a cart pulled by a bony old pony… We have had many conversations with locals since we arrived in India, and when telling our story and itinerary, universally we were told: “Don’t go to Raxaul! Bihar State is the dirtiest and most unsafe place in India…” Sadly, we found it to be true: filth and garbage everywhere, more muddy potholes than actual road, vermin infested shacks, and a vacant gaze on the faces of many… Perhaps that is why Dr. Cecil Duncan founded Duncan Hospital in 1930… Their vision is “to be in step with the Master,” Jesus Christ, and their mission is “to transform communities through caring, with primary emphasis on the poor and marginalized…” After settling in to the guest quarters, we attended evening church service with Ken W. and his family… We are looking forward to participating in what God is doing in this town…
