9/23/98: Wandered around Tai Wai neighborhood for a bit today… Booked a room in Beijing for the next leg of our trip… We are expecting the next few weeks to be among the most challenging because we will be unable to read the signs, which are almost universally in Mandarin, and are also told English speakers are very rare (some prefer well done, ha!)… Picked up 40 rolls of film, bid farewell to Jonathan and Jodi, and made our train without a problem… We shared our compartment with a very nice man who was part Chinese and Indonesian, and spoke English… Nice conversation over dinner, and we all hit our bunks at 9pm and were rocked to sleep by the motion of the train…
