10/13/98: Arrived safely in Panzhihua and met up with my friend Travis. He is teaching English at a university here with the Peace Corps… Hilarity ensued when we got to the campus and were mobbed by friendly students who spoke little or no English and we had to try and explain why we were there and describe Travis… It took a while, but we did get connected… We had lunch at an outdoor cafe with Travis and two other Peace Corps teachers, and between the 5 of us we ate well over 60 jiaotzi… To chase the dumplings we had the Chinese version of Hawai’ian shave ice (different than the “sno-cones” of the US Midwest), in which the vendor pureed a whole fresh pear with ice… It was so delicious that I wanted another, but was too full to indulge…
