1/29/99: The cat got very edgy this morning, and we found out that she was smelling two stray pit bulls that were wandering around outside the house. I nervously called them, and put a rope around the necks, then we called the pound. The dogs were a bit skittish, and would flinch at any type of movement towards them. I wonder if they are treated well by their owners… Ruth went over to spend the night with Kathy to do some more catching up.
NOTE: The photo above shows Dad about to climb back over some of the rocks along the shore in Makena. He was hunting for ’opihi, a type of limpet (i.e., sea snail) that is one of Ruth’s favorite Hawai’ian delicacies. Not only is finding ’opihi dangerous in climbing over sharp volcanic rocks, there are important laws that restrict where to hunt and how large the ’opihi must be before you should harvest any off of the rocks. So, don’t try this on your own. If you visit Hawai’I and are interested in tasting ’opihi, find a local kine grocery store (not the big box stores for tourists, but the stores the locals shop at), and buy these treats there.
