Wai’anapanapa State Park

2/3/24: *During our 1999 stay with Dad & Mom at the end of our round-the-world trip, we did not take many photos. So, I am posting photos and stories from some of our other trips to Maui over the years.

One of our favorite spots on the Road to Hana is the Wai’anapanapa State Park. The cabins are a great way to afford a night or two out in the Hana area, but they book up far in advance. If you can get a reservation, then you are withing 20-40 minutes of many of the areas worth-while sites to visit, from Hana town and its bay, to Hamoa Beach, ’Oheo Gulch and the Pipiwai Trail, as well as the museum of Charles Lindberg’s home. These are “rustic” cabins though. They have bathrooms and kitchenettes, but the running water is not heated, so the showers can be cold. So, keep that in mind.

Climbing on the lava rocks does come with its risks. Ian scraped his knees and hands when he took a spill during our 2008 trip.
Of course, Dad climbed on the rocks too, and came back with no scrapes but a harvest of ’opihi (i.e., limpets, or seas snails). And the boys loved them just like their Momma!
