2/16/99: Dad and I went to the golf course again today. This time we played a round of nine holes. Good thing it wasn’t 18, as I am not as in shape as I would like to believe. I’m pretty sore… Anyway, he gave me lots of pointers, and I only shot about 14 over par, and only managed to hit one house. Fortunately, no windows were involved!
2/16/24: *During our 1999 stay with Dad & Mom at the end of our round-the-world trip, we did not take many photos. So, I am posting photos and stories from some of our other trips to Maui over the years.
One of our favorite treats to eat when we visit Maui is shave ice. The first few times we visited, the place to go was a laundromat in Kahului a few blocks from where Ruth grew up. They had a thriving shave ice side-hustle. I don’t know if that place is still around, but now there is a great chain called Ululani’s that has locations in the islands as well as California. Da kine good stuff, brah! Please note, this is a Hawai’ian pidgin expression, and it is “shave ice,” not “shavED ice.” Leave off the “d” that you might be tempted to add on. Another thing to know, is that shave ice is not just another version of a “sno-cone,” “slushee” or “slurpee,” which you may be familiar with depending on where you live on the mainland. This sweet treat has a bed of ice-cream, then actual ice shavings on top that are then drizzled with your choice of flavored syrups. Try it, you’ll love it.
NOTE: The photo above shows Dad and I eating our shave ice in the parking lot of the laundromat in Kahului. This was the first time I ever experienced the treat, during the 1995 trip that Ruth and I took to Maui so I could meet her parents.
