2/17/99: Mom and dad were down in Kahului today, while Ruth and I played tour guide to a new friend. Doug is a medical resident back on the mainland, and was in church when Ruth was telling folks about our trip working with missionaries over the past year. He was curious about serving in India with his medical skills. We got together with him today for lunch at Azeka’s, and to show him around the island a little bit. As we watched the sunset at one of the beach-front parks in Kihei, we listened to a local fellow whose ritual practice is to play his bagpipes every sundown.
2/17/24: *During our 1999 stay with Dad & Mom at the end of our round-the-world trip, we did not take many photos. So, I am posting photos and stories from some of our other trips to Maui over the years.
Sunsets are, of course, a staple feature of any island or coastal living or vacationing experience. So, it was an obvious thing to do when we played tour guide as described in my 1999 journal entry above. Funnily enough, over the course of so many trips to Maui since then, we have encountered that bagpiper on the beach many more times. And it is not as anachronistic as it might seem, for Ireland and Scotland are island locales too. I don’t have photos of him, and I don’t have bagpipes myself (yet!), so I can’t record a lilting melody to post for you. But I do have a considerable library of sunset photos from Maui, so, here is another couple of those.
NOTE: The photo above shows a gentle wave rolling in as the sun sets from Maluaka Beach on June 28, 2022.
