The main photo shows Ruth at the Rimondi Venetian Fountain, in Rethymno’s “old town” on the Greek island of Crete.
4/26/98: Spent most of the day reading and relaxing. Did laundry. Lunch out as we walked for a while.
4/26/23: It was at this point in our trip that Ruth and I began reading books aloud to each other, so that we could share in the experience together. It is a practice that served us well as practice for years later when Ian and Josiah were born.
Our pensione was ideally located in Rethymno’s idyllic and romantic “old town”, close to many points of historical interests such as the Rimondi Venetian Fountain in Petichaki Square. I mentioned the other day in the post about Irákleio, that this island had been ruled variously by Minoan, Greek, Roman and Ottoman conquerors. This fountain was built by the Venetians in 1226AD, during their turn in power starting in 1204AD, and is still in use today! They don’t make things like they used to, at least not in America, where highways have to be repaired every 3 years.
